Charge state distributions in dense plasmas

چکیده
Charge state distributions in hot, dense plasmas are a key ingredient the calculation of spectral quantities like opacity. However, they challenging to calculate, as models Saha–Boltzmann become unreliable for dense, quantum plasmas. Here, we present new variational model charge distribution, along with simple energy configurations that includes orbital relaxation effect. Comparison other methods reveals generally good agreement average atom-based calculations, breakdown method, and mixed chemical model. We conclude gives relatively inexpensive, but reasonably high fidelity method calculating distribution hot plasmas, local thermodynamic equilibrium.

Gold charge state distributions in highly ionized, low-density beam plasmas.
We present a systematic study of Au charge state distributions (CSDs) from low density, nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium plasmas created in the Livermore electron beam ion traps (EBIT-I and EBIT-II). X-ray emission from Ni-like to Kr-like Au ions has been recorded from monoenergetic electron beam plasmas having E(beam)=2.66, 2.92, 3.53, and 4.54 keV, and the CSDs of the beam plasmas have been...
متن کاملStationary velocity and charge distributions of grains in dusty plasmas
Within the kinetic approach the velocity and the charge distributions of grains in stationary dusty plasmas are calculated and the relations between the effective temperatures of such distributions and plasma parameters are established. It is found that the effective temperature which determines the velocity grain distribution could be anomalously large due to the action of accelerating ionic b...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Model of Charge-state Distributions for Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source Plasmas
A computer model for an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasma is under development that currently incorporates non-Maxwellian distribution functions, multiple atomic species, and ion confinement due to the ambipolar potential that arises from fast electrons. Atomic processes incorporated into the model include multiple ionization and multiple charge-exchange with rate coefficie...
متن کاملPhotoabsorption in Hot Dense Plasmas
This is a preliminary version of the time-dependent local-density approximation designed to study photoabsorption in hot dense plasmas. The theory developed so far is applied to study the photoexcitation in aluminum and helium plasmas and photoionization in aluminum plasmas. 1 Self-consistent LDA at finite temperatures These notes describe a version of the time-dependent local-density approxima...
متن کاملCan Heavy Ion Storage Rings Contribute to Our Understanding of the Charge State Distributions in Cosmic Atomic Plasmas?
Interpreting cosmic spectra from ionized atomic gas hinges on our understanding the underlying physical processes which produce the observed spectra. Of particular importance are electron-ion recombination and electron impact ionization. These processes control the charge state distribution (CSD) of the gas. The CSD is intimately tied in to the observed spectral features and can also affect the...
